When discussing the greatest defensive players in football history, names like Lawrence Taylor and Aaron Donald often come up for their dominance and ability to pressure quarterbacks. Among defensive backs, Ed Reed, a Miami Hurricanes legend and NFL Hall of Famer, is widely regarded as one of the best ever, thanks to his ball-hawking prowess that saw him record eight or more interceptions in three separate seasons.
Since retiring from the NFL, Reed has followed an unconventional coaching path. After concluding his playing career with the New York Jets in 2013, he joined the Buffalo Bills as an assistant defensive backs coach in 2016.
Reed spent just one season with the Bills before returning to the University of Miami, where he served in an administrative capacity for the football program from 2020 to 2022. In 2023, he briefly accepted the head coaching role at Bethune-Cookman, but the deal fell through. Now, Reed has taken on a surprising new challenge as the offensive coordinator for Chamblee High School in Georgia.
Chamblee High School has produced a few NFL players, including Steve Wallace, a three-time Super Bowl champion with the San Francisco 49ers and a Second-Team All-Pro in 1992.
Though Reed’s expertise lies in defense, this offensive coordinator role is the most prominent coaching position he has held to date. His extensive football knowledge and leadership are expected to bring significant improvements to Chamblee, a team that struggled to a 2-9 record last season.
After nearly a decade away from direct coaching, Reed now has the chance to gain hands-on experience while mentoring young athletes with insights from his storied career as one of football’s all-time greats.
