With Nick Saban’s confirmed entry into the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025, attention now turns to other SEC candidates who might join the legendary coach in this year’s induction class.
The complete class, featuring three additional coaches and 18 players, will be announced Wednesday afternoon. The SEC has numerous strong contenders among the 77 players and nine coaches on the NCAA FBS ballot.
The SEC candidates include:
– Alabama: Running back Mark Ingram and offensive tackle Chris Samuels (last inductee: Antonio Langham, 2024)
– Auburn: Linebacker Gregg Carr, guard Ed King and linebacker Takeo Spikes (last inductee: Ed Dyas, 2009)
– Florida: Defensive lineman Alex Brown and defensive tackle Brad Culpepper (last inductee: Tim Tebow, 2023)
– Georgia: Running back Garrison Hearst and defensive lineman Richard Seymour (last inductee: Champ Bailey, 2022)
– LSU: Guard Alan Faneca (last inductee: Kevin Faulk, 2023)
– Ole Miss: Offensive linemen Terrence Metcalf and Michael Oher (last inductee: Patrick Willis, 2019)
– Tennessee: Wide receivers Willie Gault and Larry Seivers, plus defensive lineman John Henderson (last inductee: Eric Berry, 2023)
Currently, 104 former SEC players are enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
Urban Meyer (Florida) and Tommy Tuberville (Ole Miss, Auburn) represent additional SEC coaching candidates. Saban’s selection marks the first LSU coach inducted since Charlie McClendon (1986) and first Alabama coach since Gene Stallings (2010).
Jim Carlen, who coached South Carolina pre-SEC membership, also appears on the ballot.
Several candidates from SEC’s newest members are eligible, including Arkansas’s Wayne Martin, Missouri’s Justin Smith, Oklahoma’s Rocky Calmus, George Cumby, and Josh Heupel, plus Texas’s Michael Huff and Dan Neil – all from their pre-SEC careers.
Recent Hall of Fame inductees from these schools include: Arkansas (Ray Caveness, 2010), Missouri (Roger Wehrli, 2003), Oklahoma (Dewey Selmon, 2024), and Texas (Derrick Johnson, 2023).
The SEC’s Hall of Fame representation spans both current and former members, including achievements from pre-SEC eras. Players and coaches who served during the conference’s formation are classified under the SEC category.
