Since the start of free agency on Monday, the Minnesota Vikings have been active in bolstering their roster, signing key players across multiple positions. Their latest move brings in former Indianapolis Colts center and Alabama Crimson Tide standout Ryan Kelly on a two-year, $18 million deal, which includes $9 million guaranteed and incentives that could further increase the contract’s total value.
A first-round pick (18th overall) in 2016, Kelly has been a cornerstone of the Colts’ offensive line for nine seasons, earning four Pro Bowl selections and starting 121 games. Despite battling injuries in recent years, he remains one of the league’s most dependable centers, surrendering just one sack in 601 offensive snaps last season.
Kelly now reunites with Ryan Grigson, the general manager who drafted him in Indianapolis and currently serves as Minnesota’s vice president of player personnel.
During his time at Alabama, Kelly established himself as a premier lineman, winning the Dave Rimington Trophy as the nation’s top center. His ability to diagnose defensive schemes and execute second-level blocks has long been a strength, and he now brings those same skills to Minnesota. With Kelly anchoring the offensive line, the Vikings aim to provide solid protection for their quarterback while creating lanes for newly re-signed running back Aaron Jones.
While Kelly has been a consistent performer, injuries have impacted his availability in recent seasons. The Vikings’ strong offensive system and depth could help manage his workload and maximize his effectiveness. Minnesota may also look to further solidify the offensive line, possibly targeting a familiar face such as Colts lineman Will Fries to enhance chemistry and cohesion.
