The Dallas Wings are coming off a challenging 2024 WNBA season. However, they secured the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA Draft Lottery, giving them an opportunity to strengthen their roster. Arike Ogunbowale is set to return as the team’s leader, but another player on the roster is in prime position to take a major step forward in 2025.
Maddy Siegrist began the 2024 season with promise, but injuries limited her effectiveness as the year progressed. Despite the setback, Siegrist remains one of the most intriguing young talents on the Wings’ roster. Before diving into why she is a true breakout candidate, it’s worth noting what former WNBA star Sue Bird had to say about Siegrist during a recent episode of A Touch More with Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe, via the Dallas Wings.
> “Maddy is literally a scoring machine,” Bird said. “She is out of Villanova and she is still the Big East leader in points scored in Big East play for men or women. So name a Big East athlete that you like, or that played college basketball, men’s, women’s, Maddy has scored more. That is legit.
> “She also led the NCAA in scoring in 2023 and that was the one year that Caitlin Clark didn’t. So she basically beat out Caitlin. Shoutout Maddy.”
Maddy Siegrist: Dallas Wings’ Breakout Candidate
Siegrist entered the WNBA in 2023 but played a limited role, averaging only 8.2 minutes per game as a rookie. She earned a larger role in 2024, seeing her playing time increase to 23.9 minutes per game. However, injuries restricted her to just 27 appearances, though she did make 13 starts.
The key to Siegrist’s potential breakout lies in her scoring ability. Despite shooting only 27 percent from three-point range in 2024, she still managed to average 9.4 points per game. If she improves her efficiency from beyond the arc, she could realistically increase that number to 14 or 15 points per contest.
There is reason to believe she can become a more consistent perimeter shooter. During her collegiate career at Villanova, Siegrist shot 34.7 percent from deep, proving she has the skill set to be a reliable threat from long range. With continued development and more confidence at the WNBA level, an improvement in efficiency seems well within reach.
If Maddy Siegrist can stay healthy, the 2025 season has the potential to be a breakout year for the talented Dallas Wings forward.
