The Phoenix Mercury continue their offseason roster adjustments with the signing of former Chicago Sky first-round pick Shyla Heal to a training camp contract. Heal, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2021 WNBA Draft, had a brief stint in the league, playing four games for the Sky before being traded to the Dallas Wings, who waived her shortly after.
At just 23 years old, Heal still holds promise as a pro, having spent the past few seasons developing her game in Australia’s WNBL and most recently in Turkey’s Women’s Basketball Super League. She also brings international experience, having represented Australia’s national team in various competitions, including the 2022 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.
While making the final 11- or 12-player roster will be a challenge, Heal offers depth at the guard position for the Mercury, who are navigating a period of transition following Brittney Griner’s departure and Diana Taurasi’s retirement. With training camp opening April 27, Heal will have the opportunity to prove herself and potentially earn a spot on Phoenix’s revamped roster.
