NBA star Jimmy Butler is facing a lawsuit for allegedly failing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damages and unpaid rent for a luxury home in Florida. First reported by WSVN-TV on Friday, February 28, the lawsuit was filed by Florida-based company Five Star Marketing and Promotions, Inc., which claims Butler owes $260,000 in back rent and left behind over $127,000 in damages, according to court documents obtained by the outlet.
In addition to the unpaid rent, the Golden State Warriors forward is accused of remaining in the Miami property even after his two-year lease ended in August 2024. The lawsuit, filed in Florida’s 11th Circuit Court last week, alleges Butler failed to pay rent for two months at a rate of $130,000 per month.
Five Star Marketing further claims Butler changed the locks on the home and refused to provide the property manager with keys, preventing maintenance workers from accessing the house. The listed damages include a neglected swimming pool that led to algae growth, as well as improper maintenance of the air conditioning system, which allegedly caused “extensive mold damage” throughout the property. As a result, both the hardwood floors and ceilings now require replacement.
The lawsuit states that Five Star Marketing has suffered total damages amounting to $387,282. The company is seeking a payment of $257,282 from Butler and is requesting to keep his $130,000 security deposit.
According to Realtor.com, the Miami property was built in 2016 and is valued at approximately $10 million. The five-bedroom, six-bathroom home, which also features a four-car garage, was sold in 2021 for $7.1 million.
Butler has not publicly responded to the lawsuit. Us Weekly has reached out to representatives for both Butler and the Golden State Warriors for comment.
Before his trade to the Warriors, Butler had a turbulent season with the Miami Heat, which suspended him three times earlier this year—decisions that reportedly cost him around $5 million. The Heat agreed to trade him to the Warriors on February 5. Butler then signed a two-year contract with Golden State, reportedly worth $121 million.
